When it comes to getting your beauty sleep, what you sleep on is almost as important as how many hours you sleep.
We know from my post Beauty Sleep that sleep itself has many beauty benefits including decreasing signs of aging, preventing dark undereye circles, and improving your complexion and overall glow.
But did you know that you can enhance these benefits by simply changing the type of pillow case that you sleep on?
Don’t believe me?
Well keep reading to find out more
Types of Pillowcase Fabrics
Let’s start by discussing your options when it comes to choosing a pillow case.
The most common fabrics used in the production of pillowcases are
- Cotton
- Linen
- Polyester
- Nylon
- Velvet
- Flannel
- Microfiber
- Satin/Silk
Who knew there were so many choices right?
So why does it matter what fabric your pillowcase is made of?
While any of these fabrics can look great, only one of them is superior when it comes to getting the most benefits out of your beauty sleep.
And that, my friend, is the silk pillowcase.
Benefits of A Silk Pillowcase
Wrinkle Prevention
Silk fabric offers a smooth surface for your face to lie on. This smooth surface helps prevent friction that causes tugging on the skin that can ultimately lead to wrinkles.
Skin Hydration
Silk pillowcases also help to lock moisture into the skin.
While standard fabrics like cotton tend to absorb moisture, silk repels it.
This is beneficial for those that suffer from dry or irritated skin, and helps to keep those hydrating moisturizers and sleep masks in place while you sleep.
This is also an added benefit in regards to preventing wrinkles!
Prevent Hair Breakage
That smooth surface that decreases friction on the skin, works to prevent breakage of the hair too!
Instead of your hair rubbing and snagging on harsher fabric surfaces such as cotton, the smooth surface of the silk pillowcase allows the hair to glide along without snagging.
And that moisture wicking property also helps with hair hydration as well.
Silk Pillowcase Review
After learning about all of these beauty benefits, I had to put the silk pillowcase to the test for myself.
I tried the Mellanni Fine Linens silk pillowcase to see if it lived up to the hype.
And I must say that I was definitely pleased.
Mellanni Fine Linens
Let’s start by talking about the Mellanni Fine Linens company itself.
They regard themselves as providing affordable luxury bedding and carry a variety of products from mattress covers, to bedsheets, comforters and pillowcases.
With prices ranging from $30 to $40 for your standard to King sized pillowcases, I would say their claim of offering affordable prices is pretty accurate.
Most of the silk pillowcases I’ve researched have been priced somewhere between $30 to $100 with the average probably being somewhere closer to the $40 to $60 range.
And the Mellanni silk pillowcases are made out of 100% Mulberry silk which is the highest quality of silk available.
You can think of Mulberry as the Egyptian cotton of silk fabrics, making it a more luxury product.
Mellanni Mulberry Silk Pillowcase
I received the Queen Mellanni silk pillowcase set in the color light gray to match my current bedding.
The company offers about 6 different colors with a variations of a couple of the colors that include black or white piping on the sides.
When I took the pillowcases out the packaging, they definitely had a luxurious feel to them.
And fit very nicely with my current bedroom decor.
But the more important question is how did they feel???
And the answer is that they felt great!
As a stomach sleeper, the fabric of my pillowcase is definitely important to me because either side of my face is spent pressed against my pillowcase for the vast majority of the night.
Skincare is also VERY important to me, and I have quite the nighttime skincare regimen.
After sleeping on the Mellanni silk pillowcases, I did notice that my products seemed to stay in place better than on my standard pillowcases.
I already sleep with a silk headscarf to help prevent breakage and lock in moisture as I mentioned above.
But there are times that my scarf slips off at night, and having that added protection from a silk pillowcase is a great backup!
Overall, it just felt like a more luxurious experience; like I was sleeping in a fancy hotel.
Time will tell if long-term use leads to some of those great anti-aging benefits, but so far I give the Mellanni Silk pillowcase a thumb’s up!
Let me know if you’ve tried silk pillowcases and drop your thoughts in the comments below.
Great article! Admittedly, I too was skeptical about silk pillowcases at first. However, after having slept on my Mellanni Mulberry Silk Pillowcase for the better part of five months, I am such an advocate! It really does help with my complexation and cuts down on the tension on my face when moving during the night. By the way, I also chose light gray (great minds). I find this to be a very calming color and easy on the eyes at night. Thanks for writing this article, I found it to be very helpful!
Thank you for the comment! I look forward to the long term benefits as well and absolutely LOVE the gray color. I agree it’s so calming!
